Background: Was a Division II All-America in football at Eastern illinois University, and had a free-agent tryout with the Oakland Raiders in 1979. Had an extensive kickboxing career, winning world titles at light heavyweight, cruiserweight, and super heavyweight (over 200 pounds). Followed Troy Dorsey's lead and became only the second kickboxing champion to win a world title in boxing. Has beaten rated cruisers Craig Bodzianowski, Nate Miller, and James Pritchard. Had arthroscopic surgery on right knee in January to correct an old football injury. Is married, with two stepchildren and three children of his own.
Style: Considers himself a boxer, but is quickly earning a reputation as a puncher. Has been likened to legendary light heavyweight champion Bob Foster. Is tall and lean, with power in both hands. Has good lateral movement, and is adept at tying up opponents on the inside.
Strengths: Is both an intelligent stylist and a deceptively strong puncher. Throws short, crisp shots. Best punch, as was evident against Pritchard and Miller, is a punishing right cross.
Weaknesses: With only 14 pro fights on the resume, no serious technical flaws have surfaced yet, so the major weakness remains a lack of experience. In order to remain atop the division in the years ahead, will have to show heart and chin against world-class opposition.
Best Performance: Traveled to Sicily and scored a first-round knockout over James Pritchard to win the vacant IBF cruiserweight title in September 1991. The fight lasted only 24 seconds, as Pritchard was flattened with a single right hand. Pritchard didn't land a punch, and the fight went into the record books as the shortest title bout ever. Worst Performance: in his second pro outing, was knocked out in the eighth round by Pat Strachan. Was clearly not prepared for a battle with an established 10-round fighter, especially considering that the bout was held in Strachan's hometown of Nassau, The Bahamas.
Future: Rumors persist that he may be matched with WBA light heavyweight champion Thomas Hearns, who would move up in weight to seek a fifth world title. The fight will be made on if Hearns cannot secure a more marketable opponent. If a Hearns fight doesn't materialize, will likely defend agaihst mandatory challenger Alfred "Ice" Cole in the spring. At 6'4", may also have a future at heavyweight.
