A year ago at this time the name James Warring was
little more than a line in the program. Split End . . . 6-4
. Miami, Fla. That was it. At the start of the season the coaching staff still did not count heavily on Warring in its offensive plan. After all, the year before he had caught just three passes as a sophomore, and did not show enough in the spring to warrant rave reviews. Maybe Darrell Mudra was just working some psychology on Warrings mind. If so, it worked. He spent a summer of relentlessly catching passes. And then received the opportunity to start primarily because of his size. But it all came together for James in 1978 as he became the nation's leading pass receiver in nearly every |
category and a consensus NCAA II All-American. He was chosen First Team All-American by the Associated Press and American Football Coaches Association. He caught more passes (59) for more yards (980) and more touchdowns (14) than anyone in the nation. In addition he caught 21 passes for over 220 yards in the three playoff games. Against Youngstown State he hauled in 10 for 107 yards and earned the ABC-Chevrolet Offensive 'Player of the Game' Award. He set school records for most TD pass receptions in a season (14) and most pass receiving yardage (980) while tying a record for most TDs. With a repeat performance in '79, James is sure to be a high NFL draft choice next spring. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
